Building a Discipling Culture–Dirty Jobs

Posted in Uncategorized by jasonsmith on February 23, 2012

I am having a Kairos Moment.

You might hear that a lot around here in the next couple of years – decades.

I am having a significant set of realizations – God breathed realizations – i.e. Kairos moments.

The primary one right now is that Building a Discipleship Culture in a church is a dirty job.  The only way to do it is to get in the mix and get your hands dirty.  You have to be committed to giving people access to your life, creating imitate-able practices that people can look at and re-create in their own life, and then invite them into those practices.  (And then, be ready for people to call you out when you fail.)

Kind of like Jesus did.  Duh.  (Jesus didn’t fail too much, but Paul did.  I think all his letters were written in response to his disciples saying, “Paul, dude, your failing us.”)

Only at the very very end of Jesus’ life did he send out the 70 disciples 2 by 2 and say, “you go do it on your own and report back to me.”  Even then, Jesus was still in the business of doing it himself.  Why, when, in what context, did we get into into our thick skulls that we should be in the business of having other people do it without having to do it like Jesus did it?

This is really simple, but not easy.

And, I have a feeling it is going to hurt.

You wanna see the real me?  You are going to have to come into some parts of my life that are probably more messy than I want to admit.

But, come on in.
